The Dying Breed
Recently I have started taking a Public Speaking class online. I have written 3 speeches so far and the current one I am working on is a persuasive problem-solution speech, and since I can only seem to find joy in writing about agriculture I have decided to pick a topic that hits home to many. The topic I have thought about and chosen is as follows.
A dying breed. A group of people that make up less than 2% of our nation's population. The people who feed us and who provide us with essentials. These people are farmers and ranchers. They are near us all the time and they tirelessly put in long hours to enjoy the life they picked. The long hours catch up at times, but the thought of doing what they love outruns it all. So why are they called a supposed "dying breed"? Our current generations have chosen to move away from agriculture; most running these operations are in their 30-50's. So why is this so alarming? If younger people don't want to take over the operations those farms and ranches theoretically die.
How can we fix this? How can we put a stop to something that seems impossible to fix? Well here is what I propose...
Require agricultural classes in schools, encourage younger generations that farming and ranching is a god sent gift, and teach those children about where their food comes from and the beauty of it all.
Will this immediately fix it?
No.
Will this cause the problem to disappear?
No.
Will this educate generations to come about the importance of agriculture?
Yes.
But maybe one step at a time we can keep the way of life, generations before us have practiced, alive. Maybe we can enlighten the lives of many and show that less than 2% of people feeding America need more help.
Looking into the future we can change everything for the better, so why don't we change agriculture and keep farms and ranches active and alive!
Don't let the way of life many of us love die...
